The iron used to form red blood cell is reused when these are destroyed. However a small quantity, 1 - 2 mg, is lost every day and must be replaced. Since our reserves are low we need an adequate daily intake.
Women have more important daily needs due to their menstruations. They lose approximately 25 in 30 ml of blood each month, which is 12.5 to 15 mg of iron.
Teenager and pregnancy time require increased needs in iron to form new tissues and to increase their blood volume.
Pregnant women will have difficulties in covering their needs which are very high during the pregnancy. It is recommended that they take a supplementation from the beginning of the pregnancy. The supplementation would also be recommended when menstruation are heavy.
